SAGE Upstate programs aim to improve health and reduce isolation for older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning older adults and our allies.

Call Me By Your Name,
Boys in bloom.
Leaning against the backdrop of stolen
glances, they moved one another;
bucking and huffing in heat.
I saw them tracing each other’s
skin with pinkish whispers,
stumbling between bookcases, bumbling
trees and powdered hills.
One sat with boxers in hand and the other,
atop a bike seat.
I knew them briefly, intimately and
erotically, while they existed only for
one another.
And although they longed for the embrace
of romance,
they were repulsed by its intimacy.
Yearning with dark eyes and yet questioning
the disruption of their truths.
‘Maybe at the ends of each name a
revelation existed,’ I thought.
Each letter a confrontation of all
that seemed Good.
All that seemed aligned with what Goodness
and Rightness stood for.
But if these were men bending and arching
to reach the ‘Good Life,’
then what am I?

I, a Black man without the riches to
wander Italy.
I, a trans man without the privilege of
a penis.
I, a man educated enough for the degree,
yet too poor and melanated
for the wealth of Ivory.
We ... are not the same.
Elio and Oliver; figments of our
imagination.
Cruel fixtures of Greek-Gods
upon white stone that blinds and
does not forgive.
Wish fulfillment at its worst for the Black
and Brown boys.
Our names are not called upon in
the sweet hiss of Italian Summers,
they are bludgeoned, crushed
and buried beneath the pen.
Authors of a feather write away our
histories so that we’re found only in the
shadows of bathhouses.
Beckoned after only for our well-endowed
archetypes.
And wanted only when the club lets out
and they’d rather fuck anyone
than no one.

SPARK is a safe space within SAGE Upstate open to all adults of LGBTQ+
Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and allies.
It is also an intergenerational space where older and younger adults are welcome to come together and enjoy each other’s
company while engaging in conversation, fun activities, and the beneficial exchange of knowledge, history, wisdom,
and human connection. The intergenerational component of SPARK allows for a better quality of life for all.
